News!

The year is almost coming to an end. I hope everyone had a fulfilling year and I hope 2012 will be as productive and meaningful (or more!) as this year for everyone.

A few things before the end of the year:
☆I made a mix of mostly experimental music for a French online radio station, webSYNradio. It will be featured and streaming on their website between Dec 15-22. You can find my mix and playlist here.

Many thanks to my talented and inspiring friends/musicians who contributed their music to my mix. Also thanks to Dominique Balaÿ for inviting me to curate a mix! He will be getting interviewed by a French national radio show, France Culture on Dec 16th about his webSYNradio project, so please check it out! AND peptalk’s music will be featured too as part of our involvement in Project Fukushima.

Zeena and the Adorables (with Zeena Parkins and Preshish Moments) are going upstate to record our music. Really great stuff, so stay tuned.
……which makes me think
peptalk (with Preshish Moments) is almost done recording material for our EP (possibly a full length album), which is VERY exciting.

2012:
☆Many exciting shows/recording to come with Deviant Septet, Worldless Music Orchestra, Zeena and the Adorables and more in the near future. Please stay tuned for updates.

☆I am curating the Stone in NYC between 6/16-30, 2012. There will be many great acts during these 2 weeks that you don’t want to miss. Line up will be announced soon.

Stay warm and have a great rest of the year!
Shayna

Unlimited 23 DVD

I just got this in the mail!
A documentary of the Unlimited 23, an annual experimental music festival in Wels, Austria directed by Pavel Borodin. I was part of this fantastic festival back in 2009 when Ikue Mori curated the program. I performed with the Phantom Orchard Orchestra and John Zorn’s Cobra “Wels Operation” with Koichi Makigami as the prompter. Check it out!

The Stone is proud to participate in the worldwide initiative “PROJECT FUKUSHIMA!” This project features numerous events carried out on a long-term basis in and around Fukushima and globally under the name “Fukushima!”

As a part of this initiative, TWO SPECIAL SETS OF IMPROVISED MUSIC will be held at THE STONE in NYC with the following performers:

John Zorn, Ned Rothenberg (sax), Uri Caine, Shoko Nagai, Karl Berger (piano), Ikue Mori (electronics), Ha Yang Kim (cello), Nels Cline, David Watson (guitar), Yuka Honda (keyboards), Satoshi Takeishi (drums), Shayna Dunkelman (percussion), Chuck Bettis, Michael Carter (electronics), Kato Hideki (bass) and many special guests!

Monday, August 15, 2011 @ 8 pm and 10 pm
$20

*ALL PROCEEDS WILL GO TO PROJECT FUKUSHIMA!*

“After the disaster, Japan was faced not just with the damage from the earthquake and the tsunami, but also with the accident at a nuclear power plant for which solutions are nowhere in sight. Some may feel that this is no time for holding a festival, given that many people are faced with the potential loss of their hometowns, schoolyards are unusable due to elevated radiations levels, and many evacuees are not allowed to go back to their own homes. But we have not given up on Fukushima by any means. Even if some places have been made uninhabitable, we want to believe in Fukushima’s rebirth. That is why we need a festival. We need music. We need a place where people can gather to converse. We need hope, a motivation to live. In order to prevent Fukushima from being forgotten, and to retain Fukushima’s connection with the outside world, we want to make the festival a stepping-stone for the future.” —Otomo Yoshihide

A great Zeena and the Adorables review by Elliott Sharp!

“Electroacoustic harpist Zeena Parkins, who has collaborated with folks like Anthony Braxton and Yoko Ono and released a beautiful but overlooked LP last year called Between The Whiles, debuted compositions with her new trio, The Adorables. During her stint teaching at Mills College, she met young percussionist Shayna Dunkelman and electronicist Preshish Moments. The Adorables? Presious Moments? I know what you’re thinking, and, no, this is not an avant-twee trio fusing Belle and Sebastian with AMM. However, like Björk, another one of Parkins’ past accomplices, The Adorables cleverly coupled pop and experimentation.

They’d be comfortable on a bill with indie acts like Skeletons, tUnE-YarDs, and Gang Gang Dance, as Dunkelman’s propulsive percussive work adds a sophisticated momentum to the ethereal, highly-detailed pieces. Her dialogue on vibes — which at one point she played by dropping plastic coat-hangers on the keys — with Parkin’s EBow’d and processed, bird-like harp scribbles was a particularly sparkly, lovely, and spiraling exchange. Space was emphasized, with Moments’ hi-frequency zones transitioning between soft beds of texture and evolving tones whose volumes gradually, sometimes punishingly, increased. While the first stage of sleep was sometimes tickled by the tranquil layers of sound, there were noisy interludes that made the Merzbow-Wolf Eyes-Pinhas set from the previous night seem mellow in comparison.

This project stands a chance at breaking through to fans of both “serious music” and pop, maybe. But, unfortunately, The Adorables most likely will not be packing their rucksacks and trekking the club circuit. They’ll be playing in New York City on June 25 as part of the Undead Jazz Fest, though hopefully they won’t limit themselves to just the jazz and high-brow crowds for long. As my friend said after the set, “That was everything I want music to be right now.” I agreed.”
